Burton History Tours Launched

The first in a series of historic Burton upon Trent walks are set to take place this September.

The walks have been developed by two passionate local residents: Blue Yates, a guitarist and local historian, and Jim Ellington, a teacher and outdoors expert.

These walks have been supported by East Staffordshire Borough Council’s tourism team, and will see visitors welcomed to a 4 mile guided walk around Burton’s town centre, including fascinating historical locations from the early medieval period, right up to the 1970s.

The tour, which takes place on Saturday 9th September, starts and concludes outside the Burton Bridge Inn, taking visitors through the centre of the town following in the footsteps of some of the earliest Burtonians and famous visitors, from the arrival of Saint Modwen, the establishment of the medieval abbey, and the industrialisation of brewing in the town, through to more recent visits by artist L.S.Lowry and The Sex Pistols.

Cllr Paul Walker, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Cultural Development, said: “Burton upon Trent has a rich history that I would encourage all residents and visitors to the Borough to explore. What better way to stay active than embarking on a historic walk that showcases all that Burton has to offer?”

Sensible clothing and good walking footwear is advised as it’s not all on tarmac pavements. If you want to discover more of the history of Burton upon Trent and enjoy stretching your legs, come and join local historians and guides Blue and Jim.
