Recycle Week starts today

Now in its 17th year, the annual Recycle Week campaign aims to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling across the UK. Statistics released by Recycle Now show that through lockdown the UK has become even more environmentally aware, with nearly 9 in 10 households saying they ‘regularly recycle’.

Residents in East Staffordshire produce over 46,000 tonnes of waste each year and East Staffordshire Borough Council is encouraging residents to ensure waste is recycled in the correct way.

Following a recent audit of East Staffordshire waste, it was identified that grey bins were still being used to dispose of high levels of food waste which could be reduced and bottles and cans which can be recycled.

Peter Maddox, Director, WRAP UK, said: “It’s fantastic to see that, despite everything that has been thrown at them this year, more people than ever in East Staffordshire are taking responsibility for protecting the environment by choosing to recycle. This is something we can all do, wherever we live – an individual action that, when performed by everyone, adds up to a huge change”.

Councillor Raymond Faulkner, Deputy Leader for Environment and Housing said: “Recycle Week this year is an opportunity to thank everyone in East Staffordshire for continuing to recycle, whatever their circumstances, and to celebrate the way we have all pulled together. There has been a positive leap forward in attitudes that we must capitalise on so we can do even better in the coming year!”
