East Staffordshire Borough Council to Fly the Red Ensign on Merchant Navy Day

The Mayor of East Staffordshire, Councillor Phil Hudson, is to fly the Red Ensign at Burton Town Hall on Friday 2nd September at 10:00am to mark the Seventh “Fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day”.

Merchant Navy Day falls on Saturday 3rd September and gives communities the opportunity to say thank you to seafarers.

Several local authorities across the country will fly the Red Ensign to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers, acting as a way for us to show our gratitude.

The Council is supporting a nationwide call from the Seafarers UK charity and the Merchant Navy Association for the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag to be flown on public buildings and landmark flagstaffs.

Councillor Phil Hudson, Mayor of East Staffordshire, said: “Over 90% of UK imports come by ship, as such it is extremely important that we express our gratitude, while also continuing to raise awareness about our nation’s seafarers. It truly is an honour to fly the Red Ensign at Burton Town Hall once again this year.”
