Council statement following the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh

Following the announcement by Buckingham Palace of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, East Staffordshire Borough Council has released the following statement.

Councillor Duncan Goodfellow, Leader of the Council, said: “On behalf of East Staffordshire Borough Council I would like to express our sadness at this time. All of our thoughts are with the family.”

Andy O’Brien, Chief Executive, added: “Everyone at the Council is very saddened to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Council has now entered an official period of mourning and will follow its protocol for marking the death of a member of the Royal Family.”

Councillor Colin Wileman, Mayor of East Staffordshire, said: “The Mayor and Mayoress of East Staffordshire, Councillor Colin Wileman and Ms Jean Hiatt, wish to pass on their deepest condolences to her Majesty the Queen and family. 

"His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was an amazing servant to our country and he will be sadly missed.”

The Union Flag at the Town Hall in Burton upon Trent will be flown at half-mast until the morning after the state funeral. All other flags at the Town Hall will be removed during this period.

A national book of condolence will be available to members of the public to sign online at royal.uk.
