Climate Change Polar Bear

Click here to find out about the governments new energy saving initiative the Green Deal. This is the new way for owners and tenants to finance energy efficiency home improvements.

What is climate change ...

The general consensus among scientists is that human activity is contributing to climate change. Human activities like burning coal, oil and gas, have led to an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, causing an enhanced greenhouse effect and additional warming.

The greenhouse effect is the natural process of the atmosphere letting in some of the energy we receive from the sun and stopping it being transmitted back out into space. This makes the earth warm enough for life.

For several thousands of years, levels of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere have been delicately balanced. Without these gasses, the earth wouldn't be warm enough to survive. The problem now is that human influence has now upset that balance and, as a result, we are seeing climate change.

It is predicted by the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) that in the future we will experience:

  • Warmer, Drier Summers
  • Warmer, Wetter Winters

In Staffordshire, this could have positive effects on aspects such as tourism and crop growth, however, importantly this could also potentially have serious consequences on residents through severe weather episodes, such as increased flooding.

There are simple things that we can all do to help the environment and combat the effects of climate change.
