 Council Tax Discount

Council Tax Discount

There are a variety of Council Tax discounts available and they apply in various circumstances

If you want to apply for a discount you can apply here or visit one of our Customer Services Centre, either in the Market Place, Burton upon Trent or the Library in Uttoxeter. Both centres are open Monday to Saturday.

If a discount was shown on your last bill and you think you may no longer be entitled to it, please either telephone us on 01283 508030, complete the form Cancellation of Single Person Discount and email it as an attachment to council.tax@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk or alternatively come in to see someone at the Customer Services Centre.

Single Person Occupancy Discount

The Council Tax legislation assumes that there are two or more adults living in a dwelling as their sole or main residence. The charge can be reduced by 25% if only one person occupies the property (commonly known as a single person discount).

However, certain people can be disregarded for Council Tax purposes when counting how many adults occupy the property as their sole or main residence. More information about the disregarded types of people is shown in the Guidance Notes. You will also need to provide supporting documents before we can grant certain discounts.

As you may have seen in the press or on the reverse of the booklet enclosed with your 2012/13 Council Tax bill, Northgate will be undertaking a countywide Single Person Discount review. Please read our freqently asked questions page for more information.

Empty Properties

If a property has been empty for longer than six months or is classed as a second home, you may be entitled to a 10% discount.
