Swimming Lessons Frequently Asked Questions

How do we make payment when rebooking?

Payments can be made at either the reception desk or over the phone. Course dates are available on our website.

If a class is cancelled by the leisure centre how do we receive our refund?

If a class is cancelled by the leisure centre, we will make every effort to let you know in advance. A refund will be available from reception. You will be asked to sign to confirm you have received your refund.

How do we purchase our awards?

Swimming Awards can be purchased at reception. To ensure we keep our records up to date please remember to take the badge slip your child would have received during the lesson even if you do not wish to purchase the award.

How do I obtain a progress report for my child?

Our teachers often take multiple classes during a shift. This makes it difficult to provide verbal confirmation of your child’s progress between classes. If you require an update on your child’s progression simply ask at reception and a progress report will be written by the teacher within 2 weeks of receiving your request.

What happens when I hand in a transfer request for my child to move class?

In the first instance the course co-ordinator will check to see what availability there is on your 1st and 2nd choice classes. If there are spaces available your child will be moved and you will be notified. If there are no spaces you will be put on a waiting list until there is space available and transfer will then be made.

My child has been put on a waiting list to move up or transfer to another class, how long does this normally take?

If you are on a transfer waiting list it means your preferred class is full and awaiting for another customer to be moved out. If a transfer takes place during the term and spaces become available you will be notified. Alternatively, spaces often become available after rebooking week and the transfer waiting list takes priority before new customers are invited to join the learn to swim scheme.

I have recently enquired about a course and have been put on a waiting list before I start. When and how will I be contacted to join?

If you are on the waiting list it means there are no spaces in your preferred class time or day. If spaces become available during the term you will be contacted on a first come first serve basis.

Alternatively, spaces often become available after rebooking week. All waiting list customers will be emailed during week 10 of the term and asked to contact the centre. You will provided a space on a first come first serve basis.

If you are unsuccessful in finding a preferred day or time you can request to go back on the waiting list until something more suitable comes along.

Consideration will be made on a case by case basis if you are unable to attend the course due to prolonged illnesses or injuries. How can I find out how my child is progressing?

We recommend that you speak to your child’s coach. However this may not be possible before or after a session as the coach may have another session to attend. Please ask the indoor dry course co-ordinator who will obtain a progress update from the coach. We’ll also provide you with comments in your communication and reward book.

When will my child be moved up and how do we transfer from one class to another?

Moving Up - The coach will identify when a gymnast is ready to move up into the next class and they may talk this over with you. The indoor dry course co-ordinator will contact you to confirm and arrange a start date.

Altering day/time of class – If you wish to alter the day/time of your class please contact the indoor dry course co-ordinator.

I have recently enquired about a course and have been put on a waiting list before I start. When and how will I be contacted to join?

We will send you details about taster sessions which take place during school holidays. We recommend that children attend a taster session before enrolling onto an 11 week term of lessons so that they can experience a lesson and become familiar with the environment. The coach can also see which class will be the most suitable. The indoor dry course co-ordinator will then contact you to arrange a course start date.

How many children in a class?

Maximum of 16 per class at Meadowside Leisure Centre and Maximum of 20 per class at Uttoxeter Leisure Centre.

Where do I wait during a class?

We ask that parent/carers wait in the viewing area just outside the gymnastics hall so that we know where to reach you, should you be needed.

What should I expect from each lesson?

Sessions will begin with register and warm up before moving on to the equipment. The children in each group will all work towards similar skills, but the tasks given to each child may vary as these will be suited to individual ability.

How long will it take a gymnast to pass their badge?

This depends on the gymnast. Some will pass badges sooner than others, some will pass badges quickly at first but need more time to pass the more advanced badges as each one becomes more difficult. The coach will also look for consistency in the skill they are performing which requires the gymnast to do the skill at a certain standard several times before it is passed. Many of the early skills form the basis for later skills.

My child has been working on the same skills for some time, when can they move on?

Gymnastics can seem like a repetitive sport as some skills are practiced over and over again. However it is important that certain skills are perfected as these form the basis for more advanced skills further down the line. For example skills like jumping onto a springboard may sound simple but it is important that it’s done in a certain way as it will impact on every vault the gymnast performs.

Where can get I get the club kit from?

Gymnastics kit can be purchased from The Zone. Information is available in your information booklet and on the gymnastics notice board.
