Benefits and Rewards

Local Government Pension Scheme

Our employees are given the option to join the Local Government Pension Scheme which is a nationwide pension scheme for local authorities and other organisation in the public sector.

  • Employees contribute from 5.5% of their salary (contributions depend on salary range).
  • ESBC also makes a significant contribution to the scheme, which is a valuable financial reward with an excellent range of benefits.
  • Benefits include:
    • a secure pension scheme based on career average earnings; that takes account of cost of living increases;
    • the option to receive a tax-free lump sum on retirement;
    • freedom to choose when you take your pension between age 55 and 75;
    • immediate life cover and pensions for dependants.

Flexible working hours

The Council encourages a work-life balance operating a flexi-time scheme allowing most staff to work flexibly between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm.

Based on 37 hours per week (for full time) employees are able to manage the times they start and finish work and take breaks with the potential to accrue time to take full or half days flexi leave (up to 16 days flexi leave per year, pro rata for part time hours).

This enables greater freedom to balance work and personal life.

Family-friendly policies

The Council values our employees, and has a range of policies in place to provide help and support including:

  • parental leave,
  • emergency leave,
  • paid dependent care leave,
  • maternity leave,
  • paternity leave,
  • shared parental leave,
  • adoption leave,
  • compassionate leave,
  • time off for cancer screening
  • flexible working requests.

We also offer childcare vouchers.
