A Day in the Life: Community & Civil Enforcement Officer

Community & Civil Enforcement Officer

Community & Civil Enforcement Officer

Can you tell us about your first day in the role?

My first day was very interesting and overwhelming just how diverse my job role would be and how large the Borough is.

There was a lot to learn about the job role and also building up respect and trust in the community.

What is it like working at ESBC?

ESBC is a great local authority to work for with the opportunity to build your skills and knowledge while working for a local government authority.

Working for ESBC is like being part of a large family, our teams work closely together to resolve issues within the Borough as efficiently and effectively as we can.

What do you like about your role?

My role gives me the opportunity be out in the community making a real difference.

I get to meet some interesting people in our Borough and try my best to resolve issues and build community ties.

My role is very diverse so no one day is the same which keeps the job interesting.

What skills do you need to be a Community & Civil Enforcement Officer?

First of all you need to be a people person, be confident and have good communication skills.

You should be passionate about making a difference.

You need to be able to keep calm under pressure when dealing with difficult circumstances and individuals.

You must be polite and professional at all times acting as an ambassador for the Council.

You can be on your feet a lot throughout the day walking numerous miles over various terrains so you need to be fit and active.

Can you outline a typical day?

It’s difficult to describe a typical day as my role is so diverse.

Generally we are out and about trying to make a difference in the local community, whether that’s through education and speaking to people by delivering presentations or attending local community days, or through issuing Fixed Penalty Notices and Penalty Charge Notices for members of the public letting our community down.

What’s the most satisfying aspect of your role?

The most satisfying aspect of my role is helping people out in the community and resolving issues.

It can be difficult to catch people who allow their dogs to foul and not pick up.

I know from patrolling areas and from speaking to people when out and about it’s a real problem.

However when we do catch someone in the act and deal with it, it’s very rewarding to be able to make a real difference in the community.

What are the frustrations?

Although there is information out there about fly tipping and littering unfortunately it still happens.

There are a small amount of people that let our Borough down and it’s a continuous challenge to keep up to date with educating our community.
