ESBC first Council in Staffordshire to become Smarter Planning Champion

East Staffordshire Borough Council has announced that it has been awarded Smarter Planning Champion status, the first local authority in Staffordshire to be given this status and the first borough council in the wider West Midlands area.

Smarter planning was launched by the Government's Planning Portal website as part of a partnership between planning agents, local planning authorities and the planning portal to improve and streamline the planning application process.

Smarter Planning promotes a more efficient means of determining planning applications. It helps local authorities to validate and process applications easily, allowing for a smooth onward consultation and simple publication on the Council’s website.

Councillor Julia Jessel, Deputy Leader for Planning and Neighbourhoods, said: “I’m delighted that we are the first local authority in Staffordshire to be awarded Smarter Planning Champion status. We made a commitment to become a smarter planning authority by March 2017 and it’s pleasing that we have achieved this status five months early.

“This achievement is not only due to the commitment of the council to continuously improve the quality of service but also to the teamwork of all the planning staff in ensuring that we deliver our goals.”

Councillor Greg Hall, Chairman of the Planning Committee, added: “By earning Smarter Planning Champion status the Council has demonstrated that we continue to offer an efficient planning process to both residents and developers.”
