Stay Local Events

East Staffordshire Borough Council and the Brewhouse Arts Centre are excited to host a range of events this Autumn as part of its ongoing Stay Local campaign, aimed at helping the local area to recover from the Coronavirus pandemic. The events are part funded through the European Regional Development Fund, as part of Government Welcome Back Fund Initiative.

We hope that the events will increase footfall on our high streets and shopping areas as well as enable residents and visitors to discover East Staffordshire and what it has to offer in a covid secure and fun environment.

From pop up venues to street theatre, Markets and light shows there is so much for you to discover!

The Brewhouse will be returning to the Washlands, along with The National Forest Company & Coventry based Imagineer are bringing their Bridge Building Kits to the Washlands which are based upon Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings - bring a group and see if you can make a self-supporting bridge. We will also have storytelling and live performers as well as Brewhouse tutors on hand with their craft making tables and art trail. Sessions are suitable for all ages.

We’re excited to bring the Roundabout, a touring, flat pack 168 seater theatre to Burton upon Trent this Autumn. Roundabout is completely self-contained theatre with state-of-the-art LED lighting and surround sound and us coming to Burton’s Bargates between the 23rd & 26th of September for a jam packed programme of live theatre, workshops and comedy. Meet Aurora and Orion: Sister and Brother. They look after each other in their small London flat, filled with the memories of their parents’ Black Love. When that love is threatened, they have to find their way back to each other and to what it means to love whilst Black. Using real-life stories, imagined worlds and new songs inspired by an R&B heritage, they begin a  journey to confronting their own worst fears. BLACK LOVE is an explosion of form busting storytelling, an ode to Black music, and those real stories we rarely hear.

Just the Tonic Comedy Club comes to Burton on Trent, with four of the finest acts on the circuit. Described as the best comedy club in the country by Jonny Vegas, be sure not to miss this laughter packed evening in the Rounabout Theatre. Lori is a professional chef. Bex waits tables to make ends meet. One night together in a walk-in fridge and the rest is history. Lori has big plans, but Bex is struggling. If we are what we eat, then Bex is in real trouble. It's not her fault though - the system is rigged. No-one on minimum wage and zero hours has the headspace to make their own yoghurt. HUNGRY is a new play about food, love, class and grief in a world where there's little left to savour.

From reconnecting with old friends and ex-boyfriends to run-ins with the marketing department at John Lewis, stampcollecting has never been so sexy… Will Jackson is a Theatre Maker and Comedian. He is a Birmingham REP Foundry Artist, a BBC Arts New Creative and one of this year’s six emerging writers at the Bush Theatre.

Places in Spaces

Monday 21st - Friday 25th February, Burton upon Trent

Places in Spaces: Burton is an empty shop project created by students from Christ Church, Anglesey and Holy Trinity junior schools and aimed to improve the look of empty shops around Burton Town centre whilst engaging young children. Each school spent a day working with local artists to design and make their environment, these pieces were digitally transformed into large window vinyl’s by Making Trails and Hardy Signs and displayed across the 3 shopping centres in Burton. Places in Spaces: Burton explored our relationship within the community and our place on Earth. The 3 finished pieces will be up until Easter and will include some ‘escaped fish’ dotted around the shopping centres.

February Half Term Workshops
