 Footpath at Hanbury Common

Footpath at Hanbury Common

At the Neighbourhood Forum in October a local priority was identified to construct a footpath from the Car Park at Hanbury Common to Hanbury Hill. It will create a circular walk and include steps, handrails, a bridge and hard surfaces.

The benefits of this project are to open up an area of land to local people and visitors to enjoy the views and local places on interest. It will also mean that an area that has become overgrown will be managed to encourage wildlife and plants.

The project anticipated working in partnership with Staffs County Council, Countryside and Environment Dept., Hanbury Parish Council and Sudbury Prison.

Some of the labour is provided through prisoners volunteers from Sudbury. They work on the site Monday to Friday under supervision of the partnership, at weekends local volunteers work on the site. The weekend volunteers concentrate on site clearing and maintenance, whilst the prisoner volunteers are involved in the construction of the path.

One of the obstacles to the project commencing was the provision of tools, facilities for the volunteers and the storage of equipment. Having identified the project as a local priority and subsequently bidding into the neighbourhood fund, the tools were purchased. Local people assisted with the facilities and storage.

The project was commenced at the beginning of March and was completed in July.

 Using Schools out of Hours

Using Schools out of Hours

In a Neighbourhood Forum on 2009 one of the Identified priorities was whether school buildings could be used out of hours by local communities. Through the Neighbourhood Team two local initiatives have been established which do use schools outside of school times.

One initiative is the Dove Valley Archery club which provides an opportunity for young people in the rural areas around Uttoxeter to participate in the sport. Originally based at Oldfield's School they are now moving to Rocester.

The other is the Rakemark project which provides respite day care in school holidays for children between the age of 4 and 8 years old with a special need or disability. So far there have been session at in the Easter Holidays and the recent half term holidays. The project is based at the Picknall Schools in the Treetops building.
