The Access Officer is the liaison between disabled people and the Council and is responsible for providing guidance on how to achieve access to the services of the Council. There are over 11 million customers in the UK who have disabilities and have rights under the DDA. The number of people who would find services easier to use if helped by small, inexpensive changes may be as high as 25 million, that is nearly half of the population
Advice can be given to disabled people about their rights to equal access, the reasonable adjustments that may make access easier and the specialist services that the Council offers.
The Access Officer is also a source of advice for designers, developers, builders, business and service providers within the wider community and can audit premises and services on request. Full audits, walk-through mini audits, training sessions and advice are available to local charities, organisations, businesses and managers.
All employers and all suppliers of goods and services have responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Acts 1995 and 2005. The Access Officer can help you to understand your responsibilities and to find reasonable ways to meet the requirements.
