The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 makes it unlawful to make it unreasonably difficult for a disabled person to access a service and since October 2004 it has been the duty of providers of goods, facilities and services to make reasonable adjustments to remove barriers to access.
It is important to remember that alterations and adjustments should be appropriate and that building works are often not required. Before undertaking what may be unnecessary and expensive building works it is best to find out what can or should be done. The Disability Rights Commission recommend that businesses have an Access Audit assessment carried out by a properly qualified person.
ESBC can offer a cost effective Access Auditing service giving practical affordable advice presented as an illustrated report that can be updated on a regular basis or a bullet point list as a record of a 'walk-round' audit carried out with you or your employee.
