Energy from Waste
Now that Marchington landfill site has closed, East Staffordshire Borough Council are delivering approximately 70% of waste produced to the energy from waste (Efw) incinerator at Stoke on Trent.
Energy from waste is a waste treatment process involving the controlled burning of waste in carefully monitored conditions. The resulting heat is used to make energy and the hot water produced can be used to heat properties in the local area.
Energy from waste is an effective form of waste treatment and significantly reduces the amount of waste going for final disposal. Emission controls are in place at the sites to minimise air pollution.
There are currently only about 11 household waste incinerators in England and Wales.
Approximately 30% of the waste produced in East Staffordshire is being taken to Cannock landfill site.
There are currently about 1300 landfill sites in England and Wales.
