Environment Services are currently looking at including all communal properties on the recycling schemes that we provide to residents.
A communal property is where a single building contains more than one residential unit or household. For example a block of flats or apartments, or a large house that has been converted into a number of individual flats.
The number of bins provided to these types of properties is calculated based on the number of individual dwellings within the building. Before the bins are delivered a door knocking exercise is carried out and information leaflets left for the individual households.
The recycling bins provided enable the residents to recycle mixed glass, cans, plastic, cardboard and waxed cartons through one type of bin and newspaper and magazines through another type of bin. These bins are in addition to the general household waste bins.
Once the communal property receives a recycling service they become part of the alternate weekly system where the recycling bins are emptied one week and the general waste the next.
On collection day if there are any incorrect materials in the bins the collection crew will not be able to empty the bins. This is because items other than those listed as acceptable on the literature are classed as contamination. Please check that an item is acceptable before placing it in the recycling bins, if you are in any doubt please contact our Customer Services on 0800 269098 or place it into the general waste bin.
If you live in a communal property and you currently don’t have any recycling facilities then please let us know by contacting our Customer Services on 0800 269098.
