 Real Nappies

Did you know?

A baby will have approximately 2,000 nappy changes a year.
Approximately 8,000,000 nappies are thrown away in Great Britain each day.

It could cost you £800 to use disposable nappies with each child.

Used disposable nappies contain raw sewage and are estimated to make up 4% of total household waste. In Staffordshire alone this amounts to 18,000 tonnes of nappies per year (that is 1,500 refuse truck full of nappy waste every year!).

Large amount of resources including trees, oil and chemicals are used each year to produce disposable nappies for the British market.

There is an alternative
Cloth nappies are the original breathable nappies; they have no gels or chemicals to absorb liquid, just the natural absorbency of the cloth.

Cloth nappies are.
  • simple and easy to use. Modern designs are shaped to fasten with Velcro, so no pins are needed.

  • machine washable at 60 degrees and most can be tumble dried. There is a nappy laundry service in some parts of the county, which drops off clean nappies and takes the dirties away.

  • used with flushable liners, so that the waste is dealt with by the sewage system.

  • generally less expensive than disposables, when home laundered. A cloth nappy system, including home laundry, can cost from as little as £200 and will last for more than one child.

Up to £30 cash back!
Staffordshire County Council along with all Staffordshire authorities are working in partnership with local cloth nappy organisations to encourage the use of cloth nappies and the reduction of household waste.

A financial award of up to £30 per child is available for using cloth nappies.

Please note that if you are already using cloth nappies or a laundry service you are still able to claim your payment.
