Our customers

The Billing Section serves every household and business in the Borough. Most of the work we do involves direct contact with the public, indeed for many people we are the only service that they ever deal with direct. We are responsible for collecting much of the income required to provide the Council's services. We are directly supported by the Revenues and Benefits Support Service who are responsible for the Debt Recovery Service and Customer Services matters and we work closely with the Benefits Service, who administer the Council Tax Benefit Scheme.

We also provide an invoicing service for internal customers within the Council, and administer the collection of income due from miscellaneous debtors.

The services we provide

All the services are administered at the Town Hall Burton Upon Trent. The service is divided into 3 main areas:

1. Council Tax

Billing of Council Tax
Provision of advice and assistance about bills and how to pay, via the telephone, letter and email
Sending out reminders, finals and summonses

2. Business Rates

Provision of advice and assistance about bills and how to pay, via the telephone and letter and email
Sending out reminders, finals and summonses

We ensure that Council Tax is charged on all domestic properties, and Business Rates on all business properties; and that the necessary paperwork is sent to the person responsible for paying, to enable them to pay on time.

This includes sending out bills, Direct Debit forms, claim forms for discounts, exemptions and reliefs, occupation and vacation forms, and forms to advise of changes of circumstances. All of these forms are available online in the Council Forms section.
