Why do i need to register?

To be a scrap metal dealer, you need to register with your local authority.

A scrap metal dealer shall be classed as carrying on a business in the local authority area if any of the following apply:

the dealer occupies a place as a scrap metal store in the area
the dealer does not occupy a place as a scrap metal store but has a usual place of residence in the area
the dealer does not occupy a place as a scrap metal store but occupies a place for business purposes

What legislation applies?

Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964

How will my application be determined?

On receiving an application the form will checked to ensure it is fully completed. If there are any queries the applicant will be contacted.

If the form is fully completed the application will be processed and registration will be issued.

Registration lasts for three years

How much will it cost?

There is no fee for registration.

Do I need to provide further information or evidence?

No.

How long will it take to process my application?

We will endeavour to process your application within 20 working days. If acknowledgement of receipt of your application has not been received within this time, please contact us.

Will tacit consent apply?

Yes. This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from the local authority by the end of the target completion period.

If my application is refused how do I appeal?

Please contact us in the first instance for details of how to appeal.

How do I tell you about a change that may affect my registration?

You must notify us in writing of any changes to your current registration.

What if I have a complaint or concern?

If you have a complaint or concern about a Motor Salvage Operator, please contact us.

Can I view a public register on line?

No, as this register is not available for public inspection.
