 Fly Tipping FAQ's

I witnessed someone flytipping, what can I do about it?

Contact the Enforcement Team on 01283 508576 If you are willing to make a witness statement and possibly appear in court as a witness for th Council, an enforcement officer will visit you and take details of the incident. If you do not wish to make a witness statement or appear in court, you need to provide the following information:

  • details of the vehicle, colour, registration number etc
  • type of rubbish
  • where the rubbish was dumped (ie private/public land)

Any information you can give us will be useful, as it helps us to build a fuller picture of this type of offence and may lead us to identify the culprits.

There's a large amount of flytipped waste blocking our road, who should I contact?

Report the matter to the Enforcement Team who will look into the matter and arrange with the Waste Management Team for the rubbish to be collected. Provide any information on the person who may have dumped it. If the rubbish is likely to cause an infestation of rodents, a notice could be served on the owner of land, requiring them to clear it.

Who deals with flytipping on the verge?

Enforcement officers would investigate this if the land is public.

What's being done to stop people flytipping?

The following measures are taken to stop people flytipping:

  • letters are sent out the offenders and land owners
  • Flytips are being investigated by Enforcement Officers
  • Prosecutions are taken where sufficient evidence is available
  • CCTV camera can be sited to catch offenders.

Who can prosecute flytippers?

An authorised Enforcement Officer and the Environment Agency can prosecute.

Who is responsible if rubbish is flytipped on my land?

The freeholder of the land is responsible. The Enforcement Team will be happy to advise any landowners who have problems with flytipping on their land.

How long will it take to remove flytipping?

Removal times are affected by the nature and amount of waste required to clear, and the council aims to remove items as soon as reasonably practicable.
