We at ESBC have purchased two of energy monitors of which ESBC employees are welcome to borrow for a week at a time. The monitor helps with awareness raising on the amount of electricity used by each household appliance...

Many devices surprised people by the amount of electricity they consumed. These devices include ..

  • Microwaves
  • Down lighters / Kitchen Lights
  • Plasma Television
  • Central Heating Pumps
  • Washing Machine
  • Security Lights

Figures in brackets show the cost, the electrical appliances would cost you if they were on continuously throughout the year.

‘I was amazed how much the monitor went up when the kettle was on (£4,000+ per year) from the normal £498 when nothing else was on (except Fridge/Freezer, Freeview box and pond filters)’

‘It is even useful for people that are aware of which appliances consume the most, as the in-your-face display does bring it home’.

The energy monitor can change people’s habits ...

‘I turned the spot lights off in the kitchen the minute the kitchen was no longer in use (£1,200+ /year) and also the TV when I went out for an hour or two over the weekend. I would occasionally leave this on for background noise for the cats (£300+!)’

‘I started to use an uplighter with an energy saving light bulb in the dining room, instead of the main lights’

‘I turned more appliances off at the wall, not leaving them on standby’

The experience of the energy monitor has changed people’s view on energy ...

‘We are currently contemplating exchanging the kettle for a permanent hot water filter tap which are more efficient and cheaper to us’

‘This has made me more aware of minimising the amount we use’

‘It confirms my view on energy consumption’

Further comments ...

‘It’s amazing how much items cost that have a filament inside them, Straighteners, Hairdryers etc, fortunately we don’t have those items on 24/7’

‘We have a large Koi pond which is heated and has an air pump on 24/7 this worked out at only £10.00 a week which I was convinced would be a lot higher, so I’m happy keeping the Koi!’

Every user has said they would recommend the monitor to a friend – Give it a go! For further information see our energy monitor page here
