The problem ....

  • Electricity used for washing machines and tumble dryers comes from power stations which have burned coal, gas and oil to produce it, emitting CO2 in the process
  • Water companies use energy to process and supply water to your home

What can I do ....

  • Consider washing some clothes less often
  • Hand wash some items in a bowl – there is no need to wash with hot water – cold water and detergent will work
  • Only use a washing machine with a full load
  • Switch down your washing machine from 60 – 40 degrees and use the economy programme
  • Connect both hot and cold water hoses to the washing machine allowing the machine to access hot water readily rather than heating it up from scratch
  • Air-dry your clothes on clothes racks or lines – tumble dryers are very energy hungry appliances
  • Purchase energy efficient AAA rated washing machines. Though initially it is a large spend out – they will very quickly pay for themselves
