The problem ....
- Electricity used for washing machines and tumble dryers comes from power stations which have burned coal, gas and oil to produce it, emitting CO2 in the process
- Water companies use energy to process and supply water to your home
What can I do ....
- Consider washing some clothes less often
- Hand wash some items in a bowl – there is no need to wash with hot water – cold water and detergent will work
- Only use a washing machine with a full load
- Switch down your washing machine from 60 – 40 degrees and use the economy programme
- Connect both hot and cold water hoses to the washing machine allowing the machine to access hot water readily rather than heating it up from scratch
- Air-dry your clothes on clothes racks or lines – tumble dryers are very energy hungry appliances
- Purchase energy efficient AAA rated washing machines. Though initially it is a large spend out – they will very quickly pay for themselves
