The problem ....

  • When coal, oil or gas are burned to provide heat for your home, this emits a great deal of CO2 into the atmosphere – this is the main cause of Climate Change
  • Gas and coal are burned at the power stations to create electricity to power your electric boilers

There are many initiatives you can instigate within your homes to reduce the heat loss from your homes and therefore make your heating systems more efficient.

What can I do ....

  • Control your heating
  • Turning the thermostat down by one degree can save you 10% on your energy bills
  • Turn radiators off or down especially in rooms that you don’t use a great deal
  • Turn down the thermostat when you go on holiday
  • 5 Degrees will prevent your pipes from bursting
  • Set a timer for your heating system to come on half an hour before you get home and go off half an hour before you leave or go to bed
  • Put on more clothes instead of the heating
  • Draw curtains over windows at night to conserve the heat in the room, acting as insulation
  • Buy and fit draught excluders - attach these to letterboxes, windows and doors
  • Prevent droughts around skirting boards or through floorboards by filling the gaps with strips of wood, cork or the correct sealant
  • Insulate your loft. This should be at least 270mm thick; you can do this yourself however face protection should be worn

You may be eligible for grants to help you with this installation. Information can be found at

  • Insulate your walls to prevent a great deal of heat loss
  • Solid walls can be insulated either on the inside or outside to prevent this heat loss
  • Purchase your electricity from a green supplier - suppliers which obtain their own electricity via ‘green’ means, without the need to burn fossil fuels
