The problem ....

  • Turning on a light uses electricity which has been sourced from a power station
  • The energy produced from a power station has been created from burning fossil fuels emitting CO2 in the process
  • Switching to bulbs that last longer and use less energy will reduce the amount of electricity that needs to be created
  • We currently spend 10% of our energy bills lighting our homes. This is wasted energy that could be saved - saving not only money, but energy, therefore reducing carbon emissions

What can I do ....

  • Replacing your standard energy wasteful light bulbs which waste 90% of their energy as heat, to energy efficient bulbs which last 12 times longer and consume 1/5 of the energy
  • Turning lights off when they are not needed
  • Using natural light where possible
  • Becoming aware of Halogen Bulbs – they use less electricity HOWEVER they light up less of an area so you may end up using more electricity in the long run
  • Be aware of up-lighters - hi-wattage bulbs of 300w or greater uses the equivalent energy of over 30 light bulbs
