 Our Responsibilities

Our Responsibilities

Environmental Issues that the Pollution Team can help with:

  • Climate Change
  • Environmental Permitting of industrial sites (including petrol stations, dry cleaners and so on)
  • Land Contamination (including ground gases like methane and radon)
  • Private (off mains) Water Supplies
  • Smoke Control Areas
  • Statutory Nuisance (noise, light, odours, insects)
  • We are also consultees for Planning Applications and Public Entertainment Licenses, in order to ensure their approval does not cause undesirable consequences to the environment.

Issues dealt with by other Council Departments:

  • Fly-tipping of household rubbish or small amounts of commercial waste
  • Domestic infestations
  • Blocked drains and sewers for commercial properties
  • Blocked domestic drains and sewers
  • Flooding from domestic burst pipe
  • Planning Issues

Issues dealt with by Staffordshire County Council:

  • Highway and road maintenance
  • Major planning developments (including minerals extraction and waste disposal)
  • Smoke emissions from vehicles

Issues dealt with by the Environment Agency:

  • Damage or danger to the natural environment
  • Pollution to water or land
  • Poaching or illegal fishing
  • Fish in distress or dead fish
  • Watercourse blocked by vehicle or fallen tree causing risk of flooding
  • Illegal dumping of hazardous waste or large amounts of industrial waste
  • Incidents at waste sites we regulate such as landfill, transfer station etc
  • Illegal abstraction from watercourses
  • Unusual drop in river flow
  • Collapsed or badly damaged river or canal banks

Issues dealt with by your water supplier (Severn Trent Water in most instances):

  • Burst water mains
  • Discolouration, odour or taste of drinking water
  • Interruption of water supplies
  • Maintenance of Public Sewers (i.e. in the highway)

Issues dealt with by your other utility providers:

  • Gas leaks
  • Interruptions for electricity supplies

Emergency Services:

Staffordshire Police can be contacted on their non-emergency number which is 0300 123 4455. However, if a crime is taking place, if people are injured or in danger, or the offender is nearby, then the emergency 999 number should be called.

If people or property are in danger from fire, then the 999 number should again be used to contact Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service immediately. Alternatively, for general enquiries, they can be contacted on 08451 22 11 55.
